Small Business Grants

The Small Business Grant is a key priority of the New South Wales Government. The grant is designed to encourage the nearly 650,000 small businesses in New South Wales that do not pay payroll tax to hire new employees and expand their business.

 

 

What is the Small Business Grant?

The NSW Small Business Grant is targeted towards small businesses who want to increase their full-time equivalent staff to grow their business. As a one-off payment, the grant offers $2000 per full time employee (subject to eligibility).

 

 

What businesses are eligible?

To be eligible for the grant your business must :

  • have an active ABN
  • not have a payroll tax liability, during the 12-month employment period of a new person as at 30 June of the financial year.

 

 

 

What employment is eligible?

A business will receive the grant if all the following employment conditions are met:

  • A person is employed in a position that is a new job.
  • The employment commences on or after 1 July 2015 and before 1 July 2 019.
  • The employment is maintained for a period of 12 months.
  • Your number of full-time equivalent (FTE) employees, prior to creating a new position
  • must increase and be maintained over a 12-month period.
  • The services of the employee are performed wholly or mainly in NSW.

 

 

Alternatively, you can claim the grant through the small business online grant application form within 60 days after the first anniversary of your staff’s employment period. You will need to provide supporting evidence of your staff (wages and personnel records).

Export Market Development Grant

(EMDG)

What is the EMDG?

The Export Market Development Grants or EMDG scheme is a key Australian Government financial assistance program for small to medium aspiring and growing export-ready businesses.

It encourages businesses to increase international marketing and promotion expenditure to achieve more sustainable international sales.  It also provides businesses with an opportunity to enter and embed themselves in global value chains - something that encompasses 80% of global trade.

 

EMDG recipients include many of Australia's best known exporters. The vast majority of recipients report that the scheme is invaluable in helping them access new markets and develop better international business and cultural understanding.

  • Overseas representation expenses
  • Marketing consultant expenses
  • Marketing visits expenses
  • Communications expenses
  • Free sample expenses
  • Trade fairs, seminars, in-store promotions expenses
  • Promotional literature and advertising expenses
  • Overseas buyers expenses
  • Registration and / or insurance of eligible intellectual property expenses.

 

 

What do you get?

  • Up to 50 % reimbursement of eligible expenses, less the first $5000
  • Each applicants may receive a grant of up to $150,000 per application to a maximum of eight annual grants
  • Grants are regarded as assessable for income tax purposes
  • The Australian Tax Office has confirmed that GST will not apply to EMDGs
